PLE – Personal Learning Environment – My mindmap

Today, we were given the task to form a mind map about our personal learning environment. Our personal learning environment is an online learning environment which we create to cater for our personal needs. Hence, this is what we use on a daily basis to cater our various needs.

‘Personal Learning Environment (PLE) is the combination of tools, people, and services that make up individualized resources and approach to learning. It is centred around the individual’s efforts to learn.’

(Michael Quist, https://study.com/academy/lesson/what-is-a-personal-learning-environment.html )

This is my mind map about my PLE:

When I was working on my mind map, I did not think that it was going to develop into quite an extensive one. However when looking at this mind map, I have realised that my life is based around various digital tools which I mostly use everyday, from banking to leisure and many more.

Although I use these digital tools on an every day basis, I don’t consider myself a person who is quite addicted to technology. I find myself using these tools for a good amount of time but I am aware to limit and control the use of digital tools and appreciate more the interaction with family and friends. In fact sometimes I also find myself opting for traditional options rather than digital tools such as writing notes, grocery shopping and others.

Therefore, I think that creating a Personal Learning Environment is quite beneficial as ‘it connects you to people and information that are most useful for you’ which will then enable you to improve your own work. https://study.com/academy/lesson/what-is-a-personal-learning-environment.html

  1. Before I started working on my Personal Learning Environment (PLE) mind map I thought exactly the same as you – my mind map will not be very extensive. However, like you, after working on my PLE I realised how important digital devices are in my life.

I found an article written by Ori Faran (2018) really interesting. It outlines four types of digital users (https://callvu.com/blog/four-types-digital-users/). I believe you fall in the same two categories as I do – Tech-Active and Tech-Aware. It would be interesting to have your views on the matter.

    1. Thanks for your feedback Elaine and for sharing what you found. I also think that I fall in those categories because even though I use technology quite frequently, I am aware of when I should use it, what to use and how to use.

  2. Very interesting reflection both and thanks for sharing the article Elaine. It reminds me of Moore’s chasm theory which focuses on technology adoption (not only in education). Where do you see yourself?
